Causes Of Hair Fall in Men & Women

Most of us aware that hair loss means fall of hair from head or body. It is a common problem revolving around the men/women, just like satellites around earth orbital. There are many reasons for the cause of hair fall. But before going to discuss the causes of hair fall, one must understand the nature of hair growth.
In general hair growth cycle consists of three stages. They are
  • Anagen
  • Catagen
  • Telogen
The Anagen Phase: In this phase, hair grows about one centimeter, for every 28 days. Hair remains to stay in this phase for about two to six years. Approximately about 80% to 90% of the hairs on your head are in the anagen phase.
phase time of anagen will be decided based on the genetics. Some people naturally tend to have longer anagen phases, and their hair is capable to grow very long, while others will never see their hair get much longer than a foot and a half.
The Catagen Phase: This phase is a short transition stage that follows anagen phase. It lets us know the end of our active growth of a hair. In this phase, hair detaches from its blood supply. This phase lasts for about 2-3 weeks while a hair in resting is formed.
The telogen phase: After the short transition stage of this catagen phase, the hair is released and the hair follicle rests for about three months. The club hair falls out. In general, you lose about 50 to 100 hairs per day. It means that  they are in telogen phase.
After three months, the follicle goes back into the early anagen phase and begins to grew as a new hair. It's important to note that all hairs do not go through these stages at the same time.
Though we lose lot of hairs everyday, It is the main reason why we don't get into a permanent baldness, at any given moment some hairs are in the anagen phase, some hairs are in the catagen phase, and some hairs are in the telogen phase. All of them won't stick to remain the same phase.

Hair fall is also known as alopecia or baldness, the severity of hair fall depends on physical condition. Common hair fall includes male pattern hair fall or female pattern hair fall, alopecia areata. In this context, thinning of hair formerly known as telogen effluvium. In women this case most common following pregnancy. Let's discuss them in detail.

Male Pattern Baldness

The most common cause of hair fall would be hereditary male or female pattern baldness. If you have an ancestor with baldness. You may have this type of hair fall. In this case, sex hormones trigger hair fall. It mostly happens during or after puberty. It is scientifically proven fact, that male pattern baldness is linked with the male sex hormones called androgens, they perform many functions in male body like building muscles, enriching voice, and also in responsible for regulating hair growth.
As we discussed earlier, each hair on your head has a natural hair growth cycle. In case of male pattern baldness, this growth cycle alters and begins to weaken the hair follicle, this results in hair shrinking, producing shorter and, finer strands of hair. Eventually, the cycle depreciates in such a way that most of the hair follicles will be in the phase of catagen. finally, this phase follows telogen(here hair follicle gets separated from the body).
This type of hair fall usually doesn't have any side effects. But, sometimes baldness may cause due to various serious issues, such as cancers, medication treatment, thyroid conditions, and anabolic steroids. Doctors will make use of certain patterns of hair fall to diagnose male pattern baldness.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is a skin disease that affects the skin barred on hair. It is characterized by localized areas of non-scarring hair loss. In few cases, Alopecia areata is with other external or internal medical problems. But 60—70% of the cases have seen bald areas regrow their hair spontaneously.
Recent surveys conducted on alopecia areata suggests that alopecia areata is caused by an abnormality in the immune system. Such abnormality leads to autoimmunity, in such a condition immune system attacks healthy cells. It means that it is solely responsible for its own destruction. In this case, the body's own immune system attacks the hair follicles and disrupts hair growth cycle

Pregnancy

Approximately, we believe that 90% of your hair will be in growing phase at one time, while the other 10% enter a resting phase. Every 90 days the resting hair falls out and permits new hair to grow in its place.
Telogen effluvium is the excessive shedding of hair that occurs one to five months following pregnancy. This condition is quite naturally seen in women with pregnant. Generally, it affects somewhere between 40 to 50% of women. But, this kind of hair loss can be called as temporary hair loss, which happens due to the deficiency of vitamins, minerals, and alterations in hormone levels. This results in transferring an increased number of hairs to get into the resting phase. This condition does not result to cause bald spots or permanent hair loss, and it should begin to diminish within 3-4 months after delivery. If you sense unusual hair loss while you are pregnant, this may be due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency, and proper prescription of a doctor is sufficient enough to control your hair fall.

Medical Conditions

Medical conditions include thyroid disease, alopecia areata, and scalp infection like ringworm. The major illness, surgeries, and traumatic events in life can trigger hair fall. In such cases, your hair generally restarts growing without any treatment. As discussed earlier, even hormonal changes linked with pregnancy, childbirth, discontinuing the use of birth control pills, and menopause can cause hair fall.
Thyroid problems include both underactive thyroid gland and overactive thyroid gland. The thyroid is made up of glands in the part of the endocrine system, it produces, stores, and then releases the hormones. In turn, these hormones reach the blood cells for the proper functioning of the human body. But due to hypothyroidism thyroid glands does not produce enough hormones to circulate in body, this disturbs the natural hair growth cycle, resulting in hair fall. Severe and prolonged thyroidism can cause hair loss in men/women. Unlike alopecia areata it doesn't stick to a single area, it diffuses all over the scalp.

Deficiency

Deficiency is one of the major reason for the cause of hair fall. As we know starving make us weak, in the same way, starving hair from essential nutrients and vitamins makes them weak and fragile, which leads to the fall of hair. Alike our body, hair needs all nutrients and vitamins. Among them, we would like to discuss the major nutritional deficiencies, where most of the men and women get affected with.
  • Iron: Everyone knows that iron deficiency causes anemia, this is typically characterized by pale skin and fatigue, and a vulnerability to repeated infections. Most of the people may not be aware that iron deficiency possibly leads to hair fall. When hair follicles don’t get the requisite oxygen, they turn to resting phase and hair starts falling out. If you’re losing more than 100 strands a day, you may have an iron deficiency.
  • Biotin: This is part of the Vitamin B family, and is essential for converting food into glucose, producing fatty acids and amino acids, and activating amino acids in the hair roots and nail cells. So if you’re experiencing excessive hair loss along with breakable nails, you must undergo prescribed medication for biotin deficiency.
  • Selenium: This mineral has powerful antioxidant properties that perform several important functions like maintaining your thyroid function, helping enzymes do their work properly, minimizing free radicals, and so on. Selenium also plays an important role in maintaining hair and nail health by eliminating free radicals and controlling the growth of hair and nail cells.
  • Zinc: It’s an important mineral to ensure good immunity, healthy digestion, good neurological function, and thyroid function, as we discussed earlier even thyroid abnormality leads hair fall. And zinc deficiency leads you to thyroidism.
  • Copper: This mineral helps the body to absorb iron, produce red blood cells(RBC), and to maintain the immune system, nerves, and bones healthy. What you probably didn’t know that even a deficiency in copper can lead to anemia, causing your hair to fall off at an alarming rate.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy drugs are a powerful medications that attack rapidly growing cancer cells. Unfortunately, these drugs also attack other rapidly growing cells in your body including those in your hair roots. Chemotherapy can cause hair loss all over your body not just on your scalp. Sometimes your eyelash, eyebrow, armpit, and other body hair, these  drugs can cause anything from a mere thinning to complete baldness.
Talk to your doctor or nurse about the medication you'll be taking. Your doctor or nurse can tell you what to expect.
Fortunately, most of the time hair loss from chemotherapy is temporary. You can expect to regrow your hair in three to six months after your treatment, though your hair may temporarily be a different shade or texture.
